TECHING Engine Model Kits: Every Model Compared

By Stefan Florin·September 29, 2026·3 min read·10 products reviewed

TECHING makes one of the widest ranges of all-metal engine model kits: V-twins, V8s and a V12, a radial, a diesel, turbofans and a helicopter turboshaft, all machined in aluminium and steel and driven by a small battery motor. This page puts all ten TECHING kits we cover side by side, from the easiest to the most demanding, with every figure checked against the retailers that sell them.

Figures come from the product data of Stirlingkit, Enginediy and Nikolatoy, checked on September 28 and 29, 2026. A dash means the retailer does not state it.

What Every TECHING Kit Has in Common

  • All metal. Aluminium alloy with stainless steel or zinc alloy; the DM122 adds some engineering plastic and the V12 a wooden base.
  • Driven by a motor, not by fuel. Every TECHING engine here runs on a small rechargeable 3.7V battery, charged over USB, that turns the crankshaft or the fan. The pistons, valves and turbine stages move as in the real engine, but nothing burns. One retailer says it plainly of the V8: "an electric-powered working engine model, not a fuel-powered engine".
  • Precise and unforgiving. Parts screw together to real tolerances, so a part fitted slightly crooked binds rather than snapping into place. Work slowly, follow the manual's order, and turn the engine by hand as you go.

If you want an engine that genuinely burns fuel, TECHING is the wrong brand; see our real working model engines and mini V8 engines that run on gas.

Choosing a TECHING Kit

Start small. The DM122 turbofan ($149, about two hours, one out of five for difficulty) or the V2 ($369, about three hours, rated 10+) are the gentlest introductions.

Pick by engine. Car engines: the V8 or the V12. Aircraft: the radial or one of the turbofans. Helicopter: the T700. Engineering detail: the DM115 diesel with its visible overhead valvetrain.

Plan the time. Build times run from about two hours for the DM122 to about ten for the DM119, and the V12 needs more than six.

Check the run time. If you want the engine running on a desk for long stretches, the diesel, V8 and DM119 run about an hour per charge; the V12 only about 20 minutes.

Where TECHING Kits Are Sold

The kits on this page are sold by specialist retailers rather than Amazon: Stirlingkit, Enginediy and Nikolatoy. Prices and stock vary between them, and between versions of the same kit, so check the variant you are buying. All ten were in stock when we checked.

For more metal kits from other makers, see our best metal engine model kits for adults, or compare every kit we cover in the model engine kit database.

What We Could Not Verify

  • We have not built every TECHING kit. Build times and run times are the retailers' figures.
  • Scale is not stated for the V2; the V8's 1:3 comes from Enginediy's listing title. Run time is not stated for the DM122 or the radial.
  • The V2's parts count comes from an earlier listing; its current retailer does not publish one.
