Model Diesel Engines: Kits and a Real Running Diesel
Diesel engines are hard to shrink. A real diesel has no spark plug: it squeezes air until it is hot enough to ignite the fuel, and that takes high compression and an injector precise enough to work in a combustion chamber the size of a thimble. That is why most model diesels are display models driven by a motor, and why the one that really runs is worth knowing about. These are the five model diesel engines worth considering, checked against the retailers that sell them.

Figures for the RETROL, TECHING and resin models come from the product data of Stirlingkit and Enginediy, checked on October 1, 2026. The Amazon kits were confirmed by their listing titles; Amazon prices change daily, so the live price is on each card. A dash means the seller does not state the figure.
How a Diesel Differs From a Petrol Engine
A petrol engine draws in a mixture of air and fuel, compresses it moderately and lights it with a spark. A diesel draws in air only and compresses it far harder, until the air is hot enough to ignite fuel on contact. At the right moment an injector sprays fuel into that hot air, and it burns. There is no spark plug and no carburettor.
Compression ignition is what makes the diesel efficient, and it is what makes it difficult to build small. A tiny cylinder loses heat quickly, so the air struggles to get hot enough, and the injector has to meter a minute amount of fuel at high pressure. RETROL says as much in the D16's description: miniature diesels are rarely attempted because the injector is so hard to miniaturise.
Which Diesel Actually Runs on Diesel?
Of the five here, only the RETROL D16 burns fuel. The TECHING DM115, the Amazon metal kit and the brick kit are display models: a motor turns the crankshaft and the pistons and valves follow. The resin model moves on power from an RC receiver.
Be careful with listings. Some engines are sold with "diesel" in the title because they look like a diesel, while the engine itself runs on petrol with a spark plug. Enginediy's RETROL 3.6 cc single-cylinder, for instance, is modelled on an early Chinese diesel but is a petrol engine, and CISON's "simulation tractor diesel" engines run on petrol too. If an engine has a spark plug, an ignition coil or a carburettor in its specifications, it is not a diesel, whatever the title says.
What Owning the RETROL D16 Involves
The D16 is the most demanding engine on this page, and the retailer says so.
- Fuel: diesel or kerosene, mixed with 2% mineral two-stroke oil.
- Starting: with an electric drill and the supplied adapter on the flywheel. Hand cranks are no longer included. Warming the cylinder and head with a blower helps it start.
- Cooling and oil: it is water-cooled, and lubricated from its own oil cup as well as by the oil in the fuel, so check the coolant and the oil cup before each run.
- The current version: Stirlingkit sells the third-generation D16, with an upgraded fuel injection pump and injector after high-speed vibration was found to damage the fuel system on earlier engines. Owners of earlier versions can get the new parts, and Enginediy sells an upgrade kit for second-generation engines at $179.
It is a real internal combustion engine, with fuel, exhaust, heat and noise. Run it outdoors or somewhere with serious ventilation, and read our guide to running a miniature IC engine first.
Model Aircraft "Diesels"
There is one more kind of small diesel, older than any of these. Since the 1940s, model aircraft have flown on two-stroke compression-ignition engines, usually called model diesels. They run on a mixture of ether, kerosene and oil, and have a lever on top of the cylinder that adjusts the compression while the engine runs. They are a hobby of their own, sold mostly second-hand and by specialist makers, and are not covered here.
Choosing a Model Diesel
A diesel that really runs: the RETROL D16 at $1,499. Nothing else here burns fuel.
A diesel to build: the TECHING DM115 at $379, or the matching Amazon kit. For the rest of the TECHING range, see TECHING engine model kits: every model compared.
The cheapest moving diesel to build: the BseSparklion brick kit. More brick engines are in our best building block engine kits.
For an RC crawler: the resin inline-four at $89.
For running engines that burn petrol or nitro, see best real working model engines, and for every kit we cover in one searchable table, the model engine kit database.
What We Could Not Verify
We have not run these engines. Every specification comes from the retailers' product data:
- The D16's power and run time are not published.
- The D16's weight is given as both 5.5 kg and about 6.5 kg in the same listing; the second figure appears to include packaging.
- The Amazon metal kit's maker is not named on its listing, so we cannot confirm that it is the TECHING DM115.
- The Amazon kits were confirmed by their listing titles; we could not read their build times or sizes.
- The resin model is handmade, and the retailer warns that each piece may have slight imperfections.
Detailed Reviews
RETROL D16 16cc Diesel Stationary Engine
A working four-stroke diesel: 16 cc, water-cooled, with a fuel injection pump and an injector, and no spark plug. It is modelled on the early horizontal stationary diesels of the kind built by Sulzer and Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, with a cast alloy body, a 225 mm cast-iron flywheel and a wooden base, and it arrives finished. You start it with an electric drill on the flywheel adapter, with the option of warming the cylinder and head with a blower first. The retailer is candid that it expects owners to have some experience with model engines.
Key Features
- 16 cc single cylinder, 22 mm bore, 48 mm stroke
- Compression ignition, fuel pump and injector
- Diesel or kerosene, with 2% two-stroke oil
- Water-cooled; drill start
- 41 × 18 × 25 cm, about 5.5 kg
