Wind-Up, Motor or Battery
What makes these kits satisfying is watching stored energy become motion, and they store it in different ways:
- A wound spring (the tourbillon timer and the ornithopter) is the purest: nothing electrical at all. You wind it, and the gear train meters the energy out. The timer runs about an hour on a winding.
- A small motor (the butterfly, the pumpjack and the steampunk V8) keeps the model moving as long as the battery lasts, which suits a desk piece you want running while people are watching.
