Discovery MindBlown Model Engine Kit: What's in the Box and the Alternatives

By Stefan Florin·October 1, 2026·5 min read·5 products reviewed

The Discovery model engine kit, sold under the Discovery Kids and #MINDBLOWN names, is one of the most searched-for engine kits for children: a plastic four-cylinder car engine that a child builds and then watches run on batteries. Here is what is in the box, what each part does in a real engine, who the kit suits, and what to buy instead when it is too simple.

What Is in the Box

The kit's parts list, as published by its sellers, runs to about 150 pieces: 83 engine parts and 67 screws. Grouped by what they do in a real engine:

SystemParts in the kitWhat it does in a real engine
Bottom endCrankshaft, 4 connecting rods with big-end keepers, 8 piston halves, 4 piston pins, 5 bearings, lower crankcase, oil pan, dipstickThe pistons are pushed down by the burning fuel; the connecting rods turn that up-and-down motion into the crankshaft's rotation.
Cylinder block and headCylinder block, head gasket, lower cylinder head, rocker arm coverThe block holds the four cylinders; the head closes them off and carries the valves.
Valvetrain8 timing cams, 8 rocker arms, 8 valve springs, timing gear, timing wheel, timing belt, belt tensioner, timing belt coverThe crankshaft drives the cams through the timing belt; the cams push the rocker arms, which open the intake and exhaust valves at the right moment. Eight valves means two per cylinder.
Intake and exhaustCarburettor bowl and cover, intake manifold, exhaust manifoldThe carburettor mixes air and fuel; the manifolds carry the mixture in and the exhaust out.
CoolingTwo-part water pump, fan, fan pulley, crankshaft pulley, fan beltThe crankshaft drives the fan and the water pump through the fan belt.
IgnitionDistributor assemblySends the spark to each cylinder in turn.
DrivetrainFlywheel clutch, clutch housingSmooths the engine's rotation and connects it to the gearbox.
Model onlyDrive module, battery pack, engine stand, positioning jig, 2 shafts, 2 washers, 67 screwsThe drive module turns the engine; the jig helps line parts up during the build.

That is the real value of the kit: nearly every major system of a car engine has a part a child can hold, fit and then watch move.

How It Works Once Built

Nothing burns. A battery-driven module turns the engine, and the crankshaft, timing belt, cams, rocker arms, valves, fan belt and fan all follow, just as they would in a running engine. The listing titles mention LED lights. Batteries are not included.

Because the pistons are driven by the crankshaft rather than the other way round, the model shows the motion of a four-stroke engine, but not the force. That is true of every motorised display engine, including the far more expensive metal ones. For the theory, our guide to building block vs metal engine kits explains what each kind of model teaches.

Who It Suits

Ages 8 to about 12. The kit is rated 8+, and with screws rather than glue or bricks, it suits a child who likes taking things apart and putting them together. Younger builders will want an adult to help with the 67 screws and the timing belt.

A parent and child. The parts map closely to a real engine, so it works well as a shared project with someone who can explain what each part does.

Not for an adult enthusiast. It is a plastic educational model, not a scale replica. Adults are better served by the Revell Visible V8, a brick engine, or a metal kit.

Two Names, Two Listings

The kit has been sold as the Discovery Kids DIY Toy Model Engine Kit and later under Discovery's #MINDBLOWN brand, and Amazon carries it under both: the Discovery listing above, and a #MINDBLOWN DIY Model Engine Kit listing. Both describe a four-cycle car engine with valves, cylinders and hardware. Check the live price and availability of each; when one is out of stock, the other often is not.

The Alternatives

  • Same age, bigger engine: the Playz V8, also rated 8+.
  • The classic next step: the Revell Visible V8, with a hand crank and transparent parts.
  • For a teen who likes bricks: the BseSparklion inline-four diesel, 1,029 pieces.
  • The metal version, a few years later: the TECHING DM115, rated 14+.

What We Could Not Verify

We have not built this kit. Its specifications come from its sellers:

  • The parts list is taken from a retailer's copy of the Discovery Kids listing (MerchSource part number 1006975). We could not confirm that the #MINDBLOWN edition contains exactly the same parts.
  • Battery type and count are not given in the sources we could read; the listings say only that batteries are not included.
  • The LED lights are mentioned in the listing titles, but not in the parts list, so we cannot say where they are.
  • Build time and size are not published by the sellers we could read.
  • Amazon listings load their details in a way we could not read in full, so we confirmed the kit by its listing titles. The Revell, Playz and BseSparklion kits were checked the same way; the TECHING figures come from Stirlingkit's product data, checked October 1, 2026.
